Perodua Myvi’s competitor Proton Iriz officially discontinued, ending its 11-year sales journey

[PCauto] Proton recently officially ceased production of its popular hatchback model, the Proton Iriz, marking the end of the 11-year production run of this B-segment hatchback since its launch in 2014.

A photo of a bare metal car body engraved with “Last Body Production” and the date “9/9/25” has circulated on social media, bringing closure to this model.

The discontinuation of the Proton Iriz is seen as part of the brand’s strategic adjustments, aimed at making way for upcoming new models. The market widely speculates that its gap will be filled by the introduction of the all-new Proton Saga Hatchback.

Proton Iriz White Body

The mission of the Proton Iriz was to challenge the Perodua Myvi

The Proton Iriz made its debut on September 25, 2014, as a globally strategic model developed independently by Proton after the DRB-HICOM takeover, with a total investment exceeding 560 million MYR. Its launch carried a significant mission: to directly challenge the Perodua Myvi, which dominated the Malaysian market at that time, and to prove that Proton was capable of producing modern compact cars.

After its launch, the Iriz quickly gained the attention of local consumers with its sporty design, leading safety technologies, and driving experience.

Proton Iriz Exterior

At its initial launch, the Proton Iriz received a five-star safety rating from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP), becoming a standout in its class.

It is equipped with advanced features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and Hill Hold Assist, which were uncommon in the B-segment market at the time.

This made the Iriz a safety benchmark not only in Malaysia but also in the regional market, helping Proton enhance its brand image.

Proton Iriz features excellent chassis tuning

It inherits Proton’s tradition of “Ride & Handling” excellence, offering outstanding chassis tuning that provides drivers with stable handling and driving enjoyment.

Despite facing fierce market competition, especially direct competition from the Perodua Myvi, the Iriz still has a loyal fan base who appreciate its solid driving experience and value for money.

During its lifecycle, the Iriz underwent several upgrades, including a facelift in 2019 and the introduction of the crossover-style “Active” variant in 2021, aiming to attract younger consumer groups.

The sales of Proton Iriz are on a declining trend

Despite receiving initial praise, sales failed to meet expectations, partly due to intensifying competition in the B-segment market and changes in consumer preferences.

Annual sales of the Proton Iriz once peaked at tens of thousands of units but have gradually declined in recent years, prompting Proton to reassess its product lineup.

The decision to end production is part of Proton’s overall strategy, as the brand is shifting resources toward electrified and intelligent vehicles to adapt to the transformation of the global automotive industry.

The retirement of Proton Iriz sparks discussions about its successor

The market speculates that Proton may launch the Proton Saga Hatchback as a replacement model.

The Saga is one of the most successful nameplates in Proton’s history, and since its launch in the 1980s, it has been synonymous with the “national car,” known for its reliability and affordability.

Proton Saga Exterior

Incorporating a hatchback model into the Saga lineup is expected to leverage its strong brand influence to attract more entry-level buyers.

The new Proton Saga Hatchback is anticipated to share the platform and powertrain of the existing Proton Saga Sedan, which helps to reduce costs and remain competitive.

Proton Iriz Exterior

The discontinuation of Proton Iriz marks the end of an era

The Malaysian government is promoting policies for new energy vehicles, including tax incentives and investments in charging infrastructure, which provides new opportunities for Proton.

Moreover, the current sales performance of the e.MAS 7 is very strong, ranking just behind the entire BYD brand in terms of single model sales. Therefore, Proton is also very confident in the upcoming e.MAS 5.

After discontinuing the Iriz, Proton may accelerate the launch of electric or hybrid models.

Global trends show that the B-segment hatchback market is shrinking, with consumers showing a greater preference for SUVs and electric vehicles. Therefore, the discontinuation of the Iriz is the result of the times.

2025 Tesla Model Y Juniper lands in Malaysia: Price starts from RM195,450, delivery as soon as April next year

AshleySep 11, 2025, 03:39 PM

In May 2025, the Tesla delivery center in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur officially welcomed the first batch of Model Y Juniper owners. Although the delivery time was slightly delayed from the originally planned April (within the normal adjustment range for the launch phase of a new model in the industry), market enthusiasm remained largely unaffected.

Model Y Body

Core Specifications and Pricing: Dual Versions to Cover Different Needs, Optimized Performance

Tesla Model Y Juniper is available in two configuration versions in the Malaysian market: a Rear-Wheel Drive version and a Long-Range All-Wheel Drive version. The official pricing includes government electric vehicle tax incentives (insurance costs excluded). Among them, the Rear-Wheel Drive version is priced at 195,450 MYR, with a WLTP range of 466 kilometers and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds. The Long-Range All-Wheel Drive version is priced at 242,450 MYR, with the WLTP range increased to 551 kilometers and the 0-100 km/h acceleration shortened to 4.3 seconds. Additionally, the “Launch Series” model comes with the Acceleration Boost feature included for free.

Model Y Exterior Colors

In terms of exterior colors, Stealth Grey is a standard color with no additional cost, while Pearl White Multi-Coat requires an extra 5,000 MYR, Glacier Blue requires an extra 7,500 MYR, and both Quicksilver and Ultra Red require an additional 11,000 MYR each. For intelligent driving options, Enhanced Autopilot is priced at 16,000 MYR, while Full Self-Driving requires 32,000 MYR.

In terms of charging performance, both models support 11kW AC charging. However, the DC fast charging capability differs significantly: the rear-wheel-drive version supports a maximum of 75kW, providing 229 kilometers of range in 15 minutes; the long-range version supports a maximum of 250kW super-fast charging, replenishing 266 kilometers of range in 15 minutes. This effectively alleviates users’ range anxiety and, when combined with Tesla’s charging network, further enhances user convenience.

Delivery Progress and Charging Network: Broad Regional Coverage, Continuous Expansion of Infrastructure

Currently, Model Y Juniper’s delivery coverage includes three core regions: Cyberjaya, Penang, and Johor. The delivery scale will be gradually expanded based on order volumes. Charging infrastructure development is progressing simultaneously. As of June 2025, Tesla has established 14 Supercharger stations in Malaysia, equipped with 64 Supercharger stalls. By the end of the year, the company plans to add at least 6 more stations, further improving network coverage.

Recently added key charging stations include the Johor Skudai Highway Rest Area Supercharger Station, which effectively addresses users’ range concerns during long-distance travel. The Gardens Mall station features V4 Superchargers with an output capacity of 250kW and longer charging cables, enhancing compatibility and convenience for different vehicle models.

Model Y Charging

Regarding charging costs, Tesla will adjust the Supercharger rates to 1.19 MYR/kWh in 2025, a slight increase compared to 1.13 MYR/kWh at the end of 2024, but still relatively low in the market. To improve charging station efficiency, Tesla has implemented an idle fee policy. Depending on station busyness, the maximum fee is set at 4 MYR per minute. Additionally, in compliance with the Malaysian government’s requirements, Tesla will open 30% of its DC fast charging stalls to electric vehicles from other brands by 2026.

Market Competition Landscape: Tesla Needs New Models to Break Through, Policy Window Period is Key

In the first quarter of 2025, Malaysia’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) market experienced rapid growth, with cumulative sales reaching 6,827 units, a year-on-year increase of 46%. The top brands have clear competitive standings: BYD ranked first with sales of 1,139 units, with its Atto 3 model continuing to sell strongly due to its balanced product performance; Proton leveraged its local advantage with the e.MAS7 model priced from 120,000 MYR, capturing the mid- to low-end market and selling 1,001 units during the same period; Tesla ranked third with 456 units, including only 65 Model Y registrations in February. However, industry analysts pointed out that as Model Y Juniper deliveries ramp up in the second quarter, Tesla’s sales are expected to rebound significantly.

It should be noted that the Malaysian government’s current electric vehicle tax incentive policy will expire at the end of 2025. This policy window may drive a concentrated buying spree toward the end of the year. A report by Maybank Investment Bank suggests that mainstream high-end electric vehicle brands may accelerate the localization of assembly processes to maintain price competitiveness after the policy expires. This will also provide a reference for Tesla’s subsequent market strategy adjustments.

User Feedback and Professional Reviews: Predominantly Positive with Room for Refinements

Feedback from the first batch of Model Y Juniper owners is predominantly positive. Many users mentioned that “the vehicle’s acceleration provides strong thrust, the quietness during driving is excellent, and the smartphone APP remote control functions (such as pre-cooling the cabin, checking battery levels, and locating the vehicle) are highly practical. Additionally, the 2130-liter cargo space meets the needs of family usage.” Some users also offered suggestions for improvement, including “the suspension tuning is relatively stiff, making speed bump crossings feel noticeably bumpy; the minimalist interior design may have limited appeal for consumers who prefer a luxurious aesthetic.”

Model Y Interior

The professional automotive media outlet “Autocar” provided an authoritative review after testing, stating that the Model Y Juniper shows significant improvements in suspension comfort compared to the previous generation. Steering feel is more stable, and the use of acoustic glass effectively enhances interior noise insulation. The vehicle body adopts a steel-aluminum hybrid structure, and large casting technology helps control the overall weight, making it one of the few electric SUVs in its class with a weight under two tons. This provides some advantages in both energy efficiency and handling performance.

Buying Recommendations: Balancing Policy Benefits and Product Suitability

For consumers interested in purchasing the Model Y Juniper, it is important to consider their personal needs in conjunction with the market environment. If priority is given to factors such as range (Long-Range version WLTP range of 551 kilometers), fast-charging efficiency, and intelligent onboard systems, purchasing now can allow full enjoyment of the government’s tax incentive policy. Additionally, the continued expansion of Tesla’s charging network will further reduce ownership costs and alleviate charging concerns.

Regarding the timing of purchase, whether to wait for potential year-end promotions or place an order now depends on weighing the risk of policy expiration against personal driving needs. After the policy window closes, prices for imported electric vehicles may face adjustments, while the Model Y Juniper, as an upgraded model, is unlikely to see significant price cuts in the short term. It is advised that consumers consider their budget, driving scenarios, and charging convenience to formulate a reasonable purchase plan.
