What’s New?

For 2025, a new Premium Sport trim joined the family with the lower-output turbo engine or the plug-in hybrid powertrain; this year, all 3.3 Turbo S variants now get the Premium Sport option with dark contrast exterior trim.

Exterior additions for the Premium Sport include a piano black honeycomb mesh grille, black chrome signature wing and “Inline 6” badging, black 21-inch wheels, and a black and dark chrome front lower bumper valence, as well as black moldings, door trims, mirrors, roof rails and Mazda brand logo. Inside, the Turbo S Premium Sport gets a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel with power tilt and telescopic and memory setting, black or white Nappa leather seats, eight-way power adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, heated second-row seats, leather-wrapped shifter, and three-zone automatic climate control with third row vents.

One other exterior update is a new paint color, Polymetal Gray Metallic. Lastly, all 2026 CX-90s now include Amazon Alexa technology for voice commands, and PHEV trims now feature standard 21-inch wheels, eight-way power adjustable and ventilated front seats, heated first- and second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Otherwise, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 largely carries over. It can again be configured with six, seven or eight seats across three rows.

Powertrain Specs

Power comes from a pair of mild-hybrid turbocharged inline-six cylinder engines tuned to run on either regular or premium gas; all-wheel drive is standard. The lower-output engine generates 280 horsepower, while the high-output six-cylinder makes 319 hp on regular gas and 340 hp on premium.

There’s also a plug-in hybrid powertrain that uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and a 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery. The PHEV makes a total of 323 hp on premium fuel and can travel up to 26 miles on electricity alone, per Mazda.

10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: Toyota 4Runner Runs Up on Kia Sportage Hybrid

They don’t air-condition the desert for Las Vegas visitors to win, you don’t go to McDonald’s for a great salad — and you don’t buy a Toyota 4Runner for the fuel efficiency. But culture, technology and a desire to do at least incrementally better for the planet have improved overall gas mileage markedly over the past several decades, and the expectation when you buy a vehicle with a hybrid powertrain — as Cars.com did when it purchased a 2025 Toyota 4Runner in TRD Off-Road Premium guise for its fleet of long-term test cars — is you get the hybrid-powertrain efficiency you paid for even in a rugged, asphalt-eschewing SUV. The verdict after 5,000 miles’ worth of ownership? So far … s’okay.

In one of Cars.com’s most popular news articles of the past week, we check in on how our 4Runner’s fuel-economy experience is going. In 5,320 miles of driving since taking ownership, we’ve burned through 253 gallons of gas for an average calculated fuel economy of 21 mpg. While that’s actually impressive for an adventure-oriented off-roader like the 4Runner, it is 2 mpg worse than its EPA-estimated 23 mpg rating for combined city and highway driving. Contributing to the mileage deficiency could be related to an aerodynamic component we’ve experienced issues with, a problem we’ll gain more perspective on after having that piece replaced, so stay tuned.

For full details on our 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s mileage check-in — including a rundown on how our service appointment went at the dealership — follow the link below to the No. 2 news story on this week’s countdown of most read articles.

In other high-ranking hybrid SUV news, Cars.com reviewer Damon Bell offers his comprehensive critique of the refreshed-for-2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid. For the new model year, the compact Sportage sports a subtler, more squared-off exterior style; a 5 to 7 horsepower boost; a newly standard two-spoke steering wheel; an updated panoramic dashboard panel; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; newly available tech, comfort and convenience features; a driver-selectable Terrain mode for all-wheel-drive variants; and an expanded lineup in the dark-themed S and X-Line trims. Acceleration is decent, power comes on smoothly and handling is comfort-focused with a generally composed ride. The interior of the as-tested SX-Prestige trim was upscale and well appointed, and both passenger and cargo room were generous.

“The Kia Sportage Hybrid was already a solid entry in a hotly contested class, and the updates it receives for 2026 enhance its standing,” Bell concludes in his review.

How Do Car Seats Fit in a 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLS580?

By Jennifer Geiger

The verdict: The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLS580 luxury three-row SUV is very accommodating for car seats and earned straight-A grades in our test. We tested a version with second-row captain’s chairs and seating for six; a seven-occupant version is also available with a second-row bench seat.

Does it fit three car seats? No; we tested a model with second-row captain’s chairs.

Take a look at how the Latch system and each car seat scored below in our Car Seat Check of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLS580.

Latch: Grade A

In the second row, the two sets of anchors sit under plastic covers; they’re easy to find and use. Two top tether anchors sit halfway down the seatback and are clearly marked for easy access.

Infant Seat: Grade A

Installation was easy, and the seat fit well. Our 5-foot-6-inch front passenger had plenty of legroom.

Rear-Facing Convertible: Grade A

As with the infant seat, installation of the convertible in rear-facing mode was easy. The seat fit well and did not negatively affect the front passenger’s legroom.

Forward-Facing Convertible: Grade A

After raising the power head restraint, the seat was easy to install and fit well. Note that in our test car, the second-row head restraints powered up but didn’t come out. When positioned all the way up, the head restraints didn’t interfere with the fit, and we were able to situate the convertible flush against the seatback.

Booster Seat: Grade A

Again, after raising the power head restraint, the booster fit well. Stable buckle stalks should make it easy for kids to buckle up independently.mercedes benz gls 580 2025 interior csc 04 jpg2025 Mercedes-Benz GLS580 | Cars.com photo by Jennifer Geiger

Third-Row Entry: Grade A

A one-touch button on the seat powers the first- and second-row seats up to create a large opening to the third row. It takes a while to do, but the button makes it easy. Note that this can also be done when the infant car seat’s base is installed. Passengers can also use the pass-through between the captain’s chairs for third-row access.

Third-Row Latch: Grade A

The two sets of lower anchors are exposed for easy connection. The two top tether anchors halfway down the seatback are also clearly marked and easy to use.

Third-Row Forward-Facing Convertible: Grade A

Installation was easy via Latch, and the seat fit well once we removed the head restraint.

Third-Row Booster Seat: Grade A

Again, removing the head restraint helped the booster fit well in the third row. The GLS580’s buckles are stable, which make it easier for kids to buckle up independently.mercedes benz gls 580 2025 interior csc 01 jpg2025 Mercedes-Benz GLS580 | Cars.com photo by Jennifer Geiger

About Cars.com’s Car Seat Checks

Editors Jennifer Geiger and Jennifer Newman are certified child safety seat installation technicians.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Chicco KeyFit 30 infant-safety seat, a Graco Contender 65 convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.

We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible. Learn more about how we conduct our Car Seat Checks.

Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat, and that Latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, including the weight of the child and the weight of the seat itself.
