The 2025 BMW M8 Competition: Redefining the Grand Tourer

For years, the automotive world rigidly defined vehicles by a singular purpose. Sports cars were purely about performance, luxury cars solely about opulence, and SUVs were essentially dressed-up trucks. But advancements in engine technology, tire design, and suspension systems have blurred these lines, creating a new breed of vehicle that can seemingly do it all. Think of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, a vehicle that masterfully blends family hauling duties with canyon carving prowess, or the McLaren 720S, which delivers hypercar speed while remaining surprisingly usable daily. Today, we expect cars to be multifaceted, blurring the lines of what’s possible on four wheels.

However, not all attempts at blending these personas are successful. Some vehicles try to be everything to everyone and end up failing to truly satisfy any particular audience. Then there’s the BMW M8 Competition, a 617-horsepower beast that, at first glance, might seem like just another high-powered luxury GT. But spend some time behind the wheel, and you’ll discover a machine with seriously sporty intentions, a true supercar hunter in grand tourer clothing.

As someone who’s spent the last decade immersed in the performance automotive scene, I can confidently say the M8 Competition isn’t just a refresh of past BMW GTs; it’s a paradigm shift, especially for those in the Los Angeles and New York markets looking for the ultimate blend of luxury and performance. Traditionally, BMW’s grand tourers have been exactly that – grand tourers and nothing more. The original 8-Series wasn’t exactly setting lap records, and even the V10-powered M6, while exceptional on the open highway, felt out of its element on a tight, twisting back road. This new flagship 8-Series, however, flips the script. It not only redefines what a modern M-badged GT can be, but it also demonstrates the depth and breadth of capabilities that such a car should possess.

Introduced in 2019 as the successor to the now-defunct M6, the BMW M8 Competition doesn’t stray too far from its predecessor’s fundamental formula. The dimensions are nearly identical, with the M8 being slightly shorter, wider, and lower to the ground. The curb weight increases by a mere 45 pounds. The vehicle’s handling dynamics make this slight increase in weight practically negligible. What’s impressive is that this minor weight gain comes with the addition of a standard all-wheel-drive system, highlighting BMW’s engineering prowess.

The real game-changer, however, is the M8’s enhanced performance. In Competition trim, its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine churns out a staggering 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque – a healthy 17-hp bump over the standard M8’s already impressive 600-hp output. Like almost all modern fast BMWs, this power is distributed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The result? A blistering 0-60 mph sprint in just three seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (or 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package). This incredible power, especially when upgraded with performance tuning, places the M8 Competition in a league of its own.

While these numbers are impressive on paper, they don’t fully convey the visceral experience of being behind the wheel. The BMW M8 Competition feels even quicker than the spec sheet suggests. The power delivery from the turbo-eight is immediate and ferocious. While BMW has since equipped some of its high-performance SUVs with mild-hybrid systems to enhance responsiveness, it’s hard to argue that the M8 Competition needs any further enhancements. The immediacy of power is already there in spades.

On a winding back road, only the finest machinery from Woking, Sant’Agata Bolognese, or Maranello could truly outpace an M8 Competition. The car’s cornering ability is phenomenal. As soon as the road straightens, this full-size luxury GT transforms into a missile, matching the pace of high-dollar exotics. Now, framing a $160,000 super coupe as an “overachiever” might seem like a stretch, but when you consider that you’d have to spend at least double its price to achieve comparable performance, the label feels surprisingly accurate. The M8 Competition is a high-performance vehicle that delivers exceptional value.

However, even with its remarkable speed, there’s a slight disconnect between the numbers on the speedometer and the sensations felt behind the wheel. While the M8’s exceptional noise isolation is a testament to its refined cabin, it also diminishes the overall driving experience, preventing the driver from fully experiencing the physics-bending performance the car is capable of. The electronically assisted power steering, while precise and effective, offers limited feedback, and even the optional $8,150 carbon-ceramic brakes, while incredibly powerful, don’t exactly enhance the tactile connection. The engine note, piped into the cabin through the car’s speakers, sounds somewhat muffled in most scenarios. To get a better feel, many enthusiasts are exploring aftermarket exhaust systems to enhance the natural sound of the engine.

Body roll is an unavoidable reality in vehicles as powerful and heavy as the BMW M8 Competition. BMW could have opted to stiffen the adaptive suspension system to eliminate this unwanted motion, but that would have compromised the car’s overall comfort. Finding the right balance is critical, especially in a grand tourer. BMW has had some missteps in the past, but the range of adjustability offered by the M8 Competition’s Adaptive M Suspension is truly impressive. While slightly firmer than the setup in the standard M8, it remains surprisingly compliant. While it might not completely mask the car’s heft around tight corners, the trade-off is well worth it for the sake of preserving daily comfort. For driving enthusiasts in cities like Chicago or Miami, this balance between performance and comfort is key.

But don’t mistake body roll for a lack of agility. The BMW M8 Competition tackles corners in a way that defies its size and weight. The grip feels virtually limitless, and despite a slight tendency to push from the front end upon corner entry, the all-wheel-drive system ensures that all 617 horsepower are effectively translated to forward motion on the way out. And for those seeking a more traditional BMW experience, the front wheels can be completely disengaged, allowing for tail-out drifts reminiscent of classic BMWs. This is where the softer suspension tuning proves advantageous, making the car less snappy at the limit and boosting driver confidence.

Away from the twisty roads and onto the open highway, the M8 truly shines. Like its predecessor and, indeed, most BMW M cars, this grand tourer feels most at home cruising at triple-digit speeds on an open stretch of asphalt. It’s comfortable yet composed, and thanks to the exceptional noise isolation, it’s remarkably quiet for a car bearing the iconic M badge. Here, the M8 showcases the duality of its personality, proving equally adept at chasing supercars and tackling cross-country road trips. For those planning long-distance driving, the M8 Competition is an ideal choice.

A significant factor contributing to the car’s comfort is its seating. While the cabin is swathed in leather and accented with carbon-fiber trim, the choice of seats has the most significant impact on the overall experience. The standard M Sport Seats are the correct choice. While BMW offers optional carbon-backed bucket seats, these are fundamentally mismatched to the M8’s overarching goals. While they might enhance the experience on a back road, they would detract from the car’s overall versatility.

As the BMW M8 Competition enters its sixth model year, BMW continues to refine its flagship GT. The central infotainment screen has grown from 10.25 inches to 12.3 inches, bringing the car’s interior in line with the rest of the BMW lineup. Exterior updates are equally subtle, with M Shadowline trim now available for the Adaptive LED headlights, along with a selection of striking new colors like Frozen Pure Grey, Tanzanite Blue II, and Isle of Man Green.

The BMW M8 Competition is a masterclass in seamlessly blending modern technology to make a large, heavy car dance through corners like a lightweight sports car. While its on-paper specifications and luxurious interior might suggest it’s simply a grand tourer, there’s no denying its underlying sports car DNA. By pairing supercar performance with a relatively compliant suspension and a plush cabin, the M8 Competition achieves a duality that most modern GTs can only dream of. At nearly $160,000, the breadth of its capabilities makes BMW’s flagship a compelling “one-car solution” for those who demand both luxury and performance. Many owners also consider ceramic coating to protect their investment and maintain the car’s pristine appearance.

If you’re searching for a vehicle that offers supercar-level performance without sacrificing the comfort and refinement of a luxury grand tourer, I highly recommend exploring the BMW M8 Competition. This incredible machine truly embodies the best of both worlds. Visit your local BMW dealer to experience this amazing vehicle. Consider test driving the M8 Competition to fully appreciate its dynamic capabilities.
