Unleashing American Muscle: A Veteran’s Take on the 2025 Cadillac Escalade-V

After a decade immersed in the automotive world, I’ve seen trends come and go. The high-performance SUV market, in particular, has become a battlefield of compromised comfort for the sake of chasing track times. But then comes the Cadillac Escalade-V, a refreshing outlier that understands its true identity. It’s a luxury SUV first, a muscle car second, and unapologetically American through and through. This isn’t your European-wannabe; it’s a celebration of power, space, and Cadillac’s classic approach to luxury.

A Nod to the Past, a Roar into the Future

Think back to the Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG. Or if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, Lamborghini’s LM002. These were the pioneers, taking already-capable SUVs and injecting them with pure, unadulterated horsepower.

The Escalade-V follows that blueprint, albeit with a modern twist. It takes the already opulent Escalade and crams a ferocious, supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the hood, creating a rolling monument to American excess – and I mean that in the best possible way.

Luxury Uncompromised

In a segment increasingly obsessed with razor-sharp handling and bone-jarring suspensions, the Escalade-V stands its ground. It’s not trying to be a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT; it knows its strength lies in delivering effortless performance without sacrificing the comfort and refinement expected of a Cadillac. This is a crucial distinction. While some competitors are busy swapping out air suspension for stiff steel springs, the Escalade-V remains committed to providing a smooth, composed ride.

The Cadillac Escalade-V is a testament to prioritizing luxury while embracing exhilarating power.

What Makes the V, the V?

Beyond the obvious engine upgrade, the changes to the Escalade-V are surprisingly subtle, yet effective. Brembo six-piston brakes provide ample stopping power, while a quad-tipped exhaust system announces its presence with authority. Stiffer rear air springs and unique 22-inch wheels contribute to a more planted feel, and updated bumpers give it a subtly more aggressive look. However, the real magic happens beneath the surface, with software calibrations to the 10-speed automatic transmission, air suspension with magnetic ride control, and standard all-wheel-drive system optimizing performance and drivability.

The Heart of the Beast: The Supercharged V8

Let’s be honest: the star of the show is the supercharged V8. Borrowed from the legendary CT5-V Blackwing but tuned to deliver 682 horsepower and 653 pound-feet of torque in this application, it’s a force of nature. From the moment you fire it up – a cold start that rivals a Lamborghini Aventador in terms of sheer volume – to the instant you bury the throttle, the engine dominates the experience.

The Escalade-V weighs in at a hefty 6,217 pounds (or 6,407 pounds in the extended-wheelbase ESV version), but it defies physics, rocketing to 60 mph in a mere 4.4 seconds. That’s faster than many sports cars, and it’s a testament to the sheer power on tap. That raw power, however, has a cost. Owners looking to extract the most performance possible from their Escalade V in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, or even New York City should be prepared for frequent stops at the gas station. Given the current premium fuel prices, running this high-performance SUV can quickly add up, influencing the total cost of ownership.

Luxury SUV Performance Dynamics

The Escalade-V’s suspension tells you everything you need to know about its priorities. While it offers Tour and Sport modes, even the latter doesn’t transform it into a track weapon. Body roll is still noticeable in corners, and you’ll feel the vehicle’s weight shifting as you navigate twisty roads.

This isn’t a criticism; it’s an acknowledgement of the Escalade-V’s true purpose. It’s not designed to carve canyons; it’s designed to dominate the highway and provide a comfortable, luxurious ride in all conditions. The quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission, limited-slip differential, and all-wheel-drive system work together to ensure that all that power is effectively transferred to the ground, but ultimately, the Escalade-V feels like a powerful beast being lugged around by its engine, rather than a cohesive performance machine.

However, the trade-offs in handling are well worth it. The Escalade-V excels at what it’s designed to do: effortlessly cruising at high speeds and winning the occasional stoplight sprint. It’s a genuinely comfortable machine for daily driving or long road trips, a stark contrast to some of its more aggressively tuned competitors. Even in its most aggressive settings, the Escalade-V’s inputs remain smooth and refined, ensuring that you’re always in control and never overwhelmed.

Interior Indulgence

Step inside the Escalade-V, and you’re greeted by an interior that’s both luxurious and sporty. Starting with the already opulent Escalade Platinum trim, the V adds unique touches like sport seats, carbon-fiber accents, and V-specific badging. The seats are plush and supportive, providing exceptional comfort for both front and rear passengers. Even the third-row seats are surprisingly comfortable, a welcome surprise for those who frequently haul families or groups of friends.

Cadillac has made significant strides in terms of fit and finish in recent years, and the latest Escalade is a testament to that progress. The interior is well-appointed with high-quality materials, and the overall attention to detail is impressive. The cabin is also remarkably quiet, thanks to excellent sound insulation that effectively blocks out road noise and wind noise.

However, some of the switchgear, particularly on the steering wheel and center console, feels a bit underwhelming, especially considering the Escalade-V’s price tag. The impressive array of overlapping 16.9, 14.2, and 7.2-inch screens are a highlight, providing crisp graphics and intuitive controls. These screens not only enhance the cabin’s functionality but also give it a distinctly modern and sophisticated look.

Space is the Place

One of the Escalade-V’s greatest strengths is its sheer size. With 72.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, it offers significantly more room than many of its competitors, including the Range Rover. Opt for the ESV variant, and that number jumps to an astounding 94.1 cubic feet, rivaling the cargo capacity of the Range Rover with its rear seats folded down. These are impressive figures, especially when you consider the Escalade-V’s performance capabilities.

Subtle Exterior Enhancements

The Escalade-V’s exterior design is both distinctive and understated. The front fascia features a black mesh grille, a large lower air intake, and subtle lower lip spoilers. At the rear, a unique bumper with a body-colored diffuser and quad exhaust tips sets it apart from lesser Escalades.

While the Escalade-V is easily distinguishable from other trims, it doesn’t scream “performance SUV.” The design is relatively restrained, with just a touch of gloss black trim and subtly sharpened bodywork. To most people, it simply looks like an Escalade, which is perfectly in line with its overall luxurious intentions.

The Price of Power

The 2025 Cadillac Escalade-V starts at around $155,000, including destination charges. While most features come standard, optional extras can quickly drive up the price. This puts it in the same ballpark as competitors like the BMW X5 M Competition and Audi RS Q8, although it’s worth noting that those are significantly smaller vehicles.

For a bit more money, you could step up to a Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 or Alpina XB7, both of which offer similar levels of space and more refined interiors. However, neither the Alpina nor the AMG can match the raw power and visceral excitement of the Escalade-V’s supercharged V8. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference: quick and refined, or soft but rowdy.

The Verdict: A Uniquely American Approach

The Cadillac Escalade-V is a performance-oriented luxury SUV that knows exactly what it is and isn’t. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and it doesn’t compromise its core values in the pursuit of pointless performance metrics. Its supercharged V8 provides exhilarating acceleration, while its suspension provides a comfortable and composed ride.

While it may not be the fastest or most athletic performance SUV on the market, the Escalade-V doesn’t seem particularly concerned with what its European rivals are doing. Instead, it focuses on what makes an Escalade great in the first place: spaciousness, luxury, and effortless power. By adding a healthy dose of American muscle, Cadillac has created a unique and compelling offering in a crowded segment.
